Abidahs volunteering role has really supported her to develop new skills and confidence.
Abidah Akther is a University of Bradford, Law student. She joined us at QED on a 6 weeks volunteering scheme through the UOB, and progressed massively as a result of this. Out of 93 other students she won an award from the University for self development for her great progress and growth! She has also decided to stay at QED and volunteer for longer, managing to fit the time in her busy university life.
Abidah had not worked in an office environment before she came to volunteer at QED. The role has really supported her to develop new skills and confidence. At first Abidah struggled with calls as she lacked confidence in speaking over the phone, so she was asked to shadow our receptionist and then to answer calls while colleagues supported her, to make sure she was dealing with queries effectively. Abidah has also learnt how to work in a team and become a great team player. She has also picked up a wide range of general office ‘know how’.
Abidah now has all the skills required to enter any office environment. She can confidently communicate both face to face and over the phone as well as being able to use a wide range of office equipment. She will use her communication skills to apply for jobs and in interviews in the future. Abidah has also learnt the importance of organising and prioritising tasks according to business priorities to meet deadlines through planning ahead and can work well under pressure. She has turned out to be a real asset to QED!
Well done Abidah!
